Society Information & Events

The Society runs a number of events each year to bring together the members and to introduce the society to the general public.   These are typically enjoyable occasions, which have grown in popularity from year to year. This year 2019, the Store opens on 27th January and closes on 17th November and our 14th Spring Show and AGM is on 20th March.  Both these events are open for Members Only and are held at Leatherhead Parish Hall.  The Annual Lecture on the 17th of April at Leatherhead Parish Hall, our 18th Plant Sale & Coffee Morning at 19 The Mount, Fetcham on 25th of May are both open to the general public as is our 85th Annual Show that will be held at Leatherhead Parish Hall on Saturday 14th September.

The Store - The store opens on the last Sunday in January when seed potatoes onion and shallot sets are on offer.  From then it is open to Members every Sunday from 9:30 to 12:30 until the middle of November.

The Spring Show - We hold a small Spring Show for Members Only in March each year, which precedes our Annual General Meeting.   Entry requirements are exhibitor-friendly to encourage participation.   This Show always helps to brighten up the evening and is good fun.

The Annual Lecture - This year the lecture will be held at the Letherhead Institute at 20:00 hours on the 17th of April.  The talk is on a subject having a wide appeal to the public and is titled ‘A Gardener’s Life’ to be given by Geoff Peach who is a professional gardener, NVS senior judge and local radio broadcaster.

The Plant Sale & Coffee Morning - At the end of May we hold our Charity Plant Sale & Coffee Morning in the garden of 19 The Mount Fetcham and is open from 10:00 - 12:00. This is a fund raising event for local charities of choice.   We provide refreshments, a wide choice of quality plants and cakes for sale and other stalls of interest for the enjoyment of those attending.  Last year we raised £1,300, which was split between 'The Grange, Bookham' and ‘Leatherhead Branch of the Samaritans’

Visits - On occasion we run a summer day out event for Members, such as a canal trip on the Wey-Arun canal.   Suggestions for options are always welcome.

The Annual Show - On the second Saturday in September we hold our Annual Show. Entry to the Show is free and includes classes for vegetables, flowers, fruit, floral art, cookery, jam making, handicrafts and photography.   In addition to the exhibits, there are cream teas and other homemade refreshments for sale, a plant & produce stall and a raffle.   The event is concluded with the prize-giving and raffle draw. The Show is open to the general public at 14:00.

The Annual Competition - During the year we also hold the Birtwistle Award Competition for teh best collection exhibit of three local allotments at Leatherhead Poor’s, Leatherhead Highlands Road and Ashtead Allotments.  The awards for each allotment are presented at the Annual Show.
